So, we bring Targa, our new Labradoodle, home tomorrow. Any hacks/advice on having puppies in the car? Recommendations on harnesses to secure her in the seats when she is older or other products? She’s 10 weeks now, so no adventures for a while, but just curious.

So, so many pics to come.

Kinja'd!!!

She’ll ride in the hatch of the CX-3 (protection already purchased), on the bench of the D100 and likely in the passenger Recaro of the ST.

I really like the harness system they have this dog in:

mine just wears the sam e harness as for walks, which I connect to a thing that plugs into the car’s seatbelt.

like such as

Kinja'd!!!

with a “potty pad” beneath her for the excited peeing

Yes, I recommend you take your labradoodle home in an M3.

Hmm, I kinda want something that will secure her a bit more. She’ll be 50lbs full sized, so not as small as yours.

Noted on the pee pad.  No dog in ST then.

the excited peeing did cease after a few months of car rides.

Leave an old beach towel in the car for the doggo to lay on. Keeps hair and mud off your seats.

My dog used to get sick (puke) in the car from motion sickness and I started always carrying a roll of paper towels and a bottle of nature’s miracle.

Also stock up on Nature’s Miracle, that stuff is incredible.

For puppy stage I would get a 8" high rubbermaid without the lid; Keep all her stuff in there, couple of toys, blanket, etc.

Bringing her home I expect she’ll ride on you passengers lap. She’s not going to be big on sit/stay from day one.

We did a 12hr trip with B ella between us on a bench seat in one of these;

Once she gets big this is one of the best harness/seatbelts ;

Thanks for the harness heads up.

Yeah. She’ll ride in my lap on the way home. Sadly, my wife and I will take separate vehicles to pick up the puppy as she’s on call .

There is only one dog harness that has stood up to crash testing:

The rest of them do not actually hold up in an accident. I would not use any others.

Congrats! Are you planning on crate training? Helps with house training, and our pup is still sleeping in his at night. Probably will until he’s at least a year old (our older dogs sleep on dog beds). Dogs like having their own space to retreat to, and they feel very safe and secure in a kennel. If so, bringing along the crate full of some old towels and blankets will be perfect. How big do you think she’ll get? You might be able to buy one that will fit her when she’s grown, but you might need a smaller one for while she’s a pup, depending on how big she’ll get.

Also, for house training, just set a timer for every hour during the day and take her out to see if she’ll take care of some business. Use a gentle, encouraging command, like “go on”, and she’ll eventually get the idea that that’s what you want her to do when you say it (helps when it’s raining out and you don’t want her to take her time doing it!).

I don’t think we will crate train, no. But I have had it recommended to me a few times.

Honestly, it’s worth having one, even if you don’t plan on using it too often.

Puppies are a lot of work, but worth it, and a ton of fun! Enjoy - they’re only this little once. =)

The family black lab just sits in the backseat when he goes places. He’s a good boy.

Crate training is good, even if you never plan to use it. I feed my dogs in their crates which seems to make them associate the crate with a positive experience .  Some times you just need to put a dog in a crate.  Maybe they’re not feeling well, just had their lady/boy bits removed, did a bad, or you just need a break.  Crates are good.  One of mine just chills in his sometimes.

On car stuff, I usually give mine 1 benadryl per 25 pounds of doggo . This helps calm them down and settles their stomachs . A lot of people get weird about “drugging” the dogs but meh... it makes it more pleasant for everyone involved, including the doggo.

For safety reasons, I’m pretty firmly against letting a dog chill in the front seat, even if it is more awesome that way.

I’ve always just let dogs roam in my cars, which is probably a bad idea, but hasn’t hurt me yet (though one dog peed on my passenger floor mat after slipping down there under hard braking). Presumably a normal harness (I like these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005CTGC6K ) combined with one of those seat belt latch tethers is safe enough. You can also transport in a carrier (I use this one, though mainly for flying: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002N65VPI ) and then strap that in with the seatbelt (obviously only an option for smaller dogs) .
